Mr. "Whatever It Takes" Is Now The Most Talked About Bodybuilder In The World
Rich Piana Receives Massive Free Publicity from the International News Media
He is one of the top YouTube celebrities in the world of bodybuilding. And now he has gained some significant mainstream exposure in several of the internet's most popular news and entertainment websites over the weekend. The generous free publicity came in the form of feature articles by Deadspin, The Daily Mail (UK) and News.com.au (Australia).
Felix Blederman, writing for Deadspin started the wave of mainstream Piana mania with generally positive review of Piana as a fascinating and entertaining Youtube fitness personality in an article titled, “Youtube Bodybuilders Rich Piana and Dmitry Klokov Can Teach You How To Live” on May 4, 2016.
“Rich Piana is America,” writes Blederman. “He’s vulgar and consumptive. His rabid desire to be as big as possible is almost pathological; he clearly hates it, but continues, because it’s part of a point he must prove. That point is never defined, but it’s definitely there, a fitness-enthusiast mirror to the neoconservative quest to provide meaning for America’s existence by combatting evil in an endless series of wars.
“He espouses the ideas of equality and opportunity, but lives a stratified existence… He beams with positive truisms. Everything he does is cloaked in his own personal branding, and he espouses his own form of American exceptionalism in his 'five percent of people will do whatever it takes' credo.”
Of course, Blederman can't avoid commenting on Piana's open and honest discussion about about anabolic steroids and Piana's decades-long history of steroid use. Blederman opines that Piana uses such high quantities of steroids that people are begging him to stop (presumably for health concerns). Blederman takes interest in Piana's claim that steroids make his “dick look bigger by comparison” because they cause his testes to atrophy.
By the weekend, the British middle-market tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail published a feature on Piana that focused primarily on his open and judicious use of steroids titled, “Meet the 310lbs bodybuilder, 45, who admits taking steroids since he was a teenager and insists he 'wouldn't change a thing'”.
Chris Pleasance zeroed in on the fact that Piana started using steroids at 18 years old to begin his 27-year ongoing experiment with the muscle-building drugs. Pleasance is much more critical than Blederman in his assessment of Piana. Consistent with The Daily Mail's sensationalistic and demonizing approach to the topic, Pleasance seems appalled at Piana's “extreme” steroid use, his public posting of drug-taking schedules, his several thousand dollar monthly expenditure on PEDs, and his unapologetic satisfaction with a lifetime on steroids.
To Pleasance's credit, the tabloid journalist quoted Piana's defense of his decision to use steroids.
“If you have the choice to do steroids or stay natural, stay natural,” Piana is quoted as saying. “There's no reason to do steroids, you're only hurting your body and hurting yourself.
“But if you want to become a professional bodybuilder, guess what? You're probably going to have to f***ing do them, you're not going to have a choice. That's the boat I was in.
“But you know what, I’m happy with everything I chose and happy with the way everything went in my life. I'm completely happy with the choice that I made to start taking steroids at an early age of 18. My health is fine, everything’s good.”
The following day, Rohan Smith, writing for the News Corp-owned News.com.au website, also took a stab at explaining the social media phenomenon known as Rich Piana in an article titled, “Rich Piana is a polarising figure within the bodybuilding world and that’s just the way he wants it”.
Smith focused on Piana's well-established ethos of “whatever it takes” and the role that steroids play in doing what it takes to become a bodybuilder with a monstrous physique. It is Piana's ethos and his honesty about steroids that Piana believes is the secret to his success.
“Coming out, talking about steroids, just being straight up with people,” Piana said in a recent video. “I think people trust me.”
Smith highlighted Piana's “Bigger by the Day” transformation program as a scary-sounding example of Piana's extreme approach to bodybuilding.
“This is what it consists of: A massive steroid cycle, nine meals a day, a series of workouts not fit for the average human being and, according to one recent profile, 'protein shakes big enough to drown a toddler in'”, writes Smith. “In a social media blitz across Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, the 45-year-old has been sharing almost daily pictures and videos. A month ago, on Day 76 of the program, he wrote that he was weighing in at 312 pounds (141.5kg) and that number was actually “down” on recent gains.
“Among the captions were the words: 'Monsters do exist.' They do indeed.”
Regardless of the opinions of any of the writers from Deadspin, The Daily News or News.com.au, one thing is certain. All publicity is good publicity for Rich Piana. The free publicity means more Youtube and Instagram followers and more customers for Rich Piana 5% Nutrition.
